An article published in late November in the New England Journal of Medicine indicates that fertility drugs, not IVF, are the leading cause of multiple births. The article contains an interesting graph regarding the incidence of multiple birth pregnancies and their causes.

Embryo adopting families have experienced multiple births as a result of the number of embryos transferred during the frozen embryo transfer treatment (FET) or because an embryo that was transferred split and identical twins resulted!

The chance for a multiple pregnancy through embryo adoption can be reduced by limiting the number of embryos transferred during any single FET.
