You feel like you’ve tried everything.

You’ve improved your diet, increased exercise, taken fertility drugs and, all in an attempt to achieve a pregnancy. But nothing seems to be working.

Is it possible that the key ingredient you are missing to overcome infertility is… sleep?

According to a recent study, that may just be the case.

The amount of sleep a person gets is crucial to the effective performance of the endocrine system, which plays an important part in regulating bodily functions – including the production of hormones. In women, the hormone leptin is key in regard to controlling ovulation.

Researchers in Boston recently showed that the amount of leptin in a woman’s body is directly related to her fertility. Simply put: not enough sleep, not enough leptin. Not enough leptin, a higher chance of infertility.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends between seven to nine hours of sleep per night for adults. For more information on improving sleep habits, click here. For more information on infertility and its causes, visit the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services.
